What size rhinestones fit a volleyball?

A ball is a sphere, and spheres punish big stones less than shoes do. The problem here is not curvature, it is that the area is enormous.

Short answer

SS10 stones at 2.8 mm are the practical choice for a volleyball, because a standard 8.15 inch ball curves gently enough that SS10 sits flat on a panel. Covering the whole ball would take about 13,445 SS10 stones, so most people bling a name, a number or one panel.

The ball surface area explains why nobody covers a volleyball

A standard indoor volleyball is 8.15 inches in diameter, or 207 mm. Surface area is 4πr², which for a 103.5 mm radius is 134,600 mm².

Full coverage is roughly 94 gross, and at 200 stones an hour it is 67 hours of work. That number is the entire argument for doing one panel.

How many rhinestones a team name and number take

Lettering fills about 40% of the box it sits in, because letters are hollow. A team name 120 mm wide and 30 mm tall sits in a 3,600 mm² box, so it uses about 144 SS10 stones.

A number set 60 mm tall and 40 mm wide is a 2,400 mm² box, giving roughly 96 stones. Name plus number plus a row along one panel seam lands between 300 and 600 stones, which is 3 to 5 gross.

A single fully covered panel is about a fifth of the ball, so roughly 2,700 stones. That is the size of project that still finishes in an evening.

The volleyball surface that decides whether stones stay on

Composite volleyballs have a synthetic leather cover with seams that are stitched or glued. Hotfix adhesive does not bond to that surface the way it bonds to cotton.

A ball that will be served and spiked will lose stones. Bling a display ball, a gift ball, or a ball that hangs in a gym bag, not the one in play.

Applying a template to a curved volleyball

  1. Cut the template per panel rather than as one wrap. A flat sheet cannot follow a sphere without creasing.
  2. Print at 100% and check the 25.4 mm line before cutting the holes.
  3. Start at the centre of the panel and work outward, taping the edges as you go.
  4. Cut relief slits at the panel seams rather than stretching the sheet flat.

Paper is fine for a one-off ball. Mylar is worth it if you are doing a set for a team.

Set up a team name for one panel

Opens at 120 mm wide, SS10, 0.6 mm gap, which fits inside a single panel of a standard ball.

Questions about bedazzling a volleyball

How many rhinestones to cover a whole volleyball?

About 13,445 SS10 stones for an 8.15 inch ball, which is 94 gross. In SS6 it is 22,993 stones and 160 gross. Almost nobody does this, because the placement time runs to tens of hours.

What size rhinestones for a volleyball team gift?

SS10 for the name and number, SS16 only if you are filling a large area and want speed. SS6 on a ball is a patience project: it covers the curve beautifully but triples the stone count.

Do rhinestones stay on a volleyball that gets used?

Rarely. A played ball flexes and abrades at every contact, and no adhesive survives that for long. Bling a display ball, a trophy ball or a gift, and keep the game ball plain.

How many stones for one panel?

A panel is roughly a fifth of the surface, so about 2,700 SS10 stones for full coverage. A name and number inside one panel is 300 to 600 stones, which is the usual order.
