How many rhinestones does it take to cover a book?

Book covers are the one project where full coverage is technically easy and financially silly. The area math explains why in one line.

Short answer

A 5.5 x 8.5 inch paperback cover is 30,161 mm², which takes about 3,013 SS10 stones, or 21 gross, for full coverage. A 6 x 9 inch cover takes 3,480 stones. Most decorated books use a border and a title instead, which is 400 to 700 stones.

The cover area decides the book rhinestone count

Measure the front cover, not the book. Convert to millimetres, multiply, and divide by the area one stone occupies. Offset rows with a 0.6 mm gap use 10.01 mm² per SS10 stone.

6 x 9 in34,839 mm²3,48025
8.5 x 11 in60,322 mm²6,02642

In SS6 the same 5.5 x 8.5 cover takes 5,153 stones, and in SS16 it takes 1,720. Stone size moves the order by a factor of three.

Why a border and a title beat full coverage on a book

Full coverage of a paperback is 21 gross, roughly 3,000 stones placed one at a time. At a realistic 200 stones an hour that is 15 hours for a single cover.

A border and a title is about 400 to 700 stones, one to two hours of work, and it reads as deliberate rather than busy. The numbers that make the difference:

The hinge is the part of a book cover that must stay flexible

A paperback hinge opens 180°. Stones set across it will pop the first time the book is opened, and they will take the cover laminate with them.

Keep a 15 mm clear band on the spine side. On a hardcover, the same applies to the joint, and the board under the cloth does not flex at all, so stones there crack instead of lifting.

If the book is decorative and will never open, ignore this. If it will be read, the band is not optional.

Printing a book cover template that lines up with the edges

  1. Measure the trim size of the cover, which is usually 3 mm smaller than the page size on all sides.
  2. Set the width in millimetres, and keep the finished height under the cover height so the template does not run into the hinge.
  3. Print at 100% and check the 25.4 mm line before cutting anything.
  4. Align the template to the top and outer edge, not the spine edge, because that is the edge that varies between copies.

Questions about bedazzling a book cover

How many rhinestones to cover a book cover completely?

For a 5.5 x 8.5 inch paperback that is about 3,013 SS10 stones, or 21 gross. In SS6 it is 5,153 stones and 36 gross, which is why most people bling a border rather than the whole cover.

What size rhinestones for a book cover?

SS10 at 2.8 mm is the practical choice: large enough to cover area quickly, small enough to turn a corner on the cover edge. SS16 halves the placement time but reads as a coarse, costume-like finish on a book.

Will rhinestones damage a book?

Heat will. A hotfix iron over a laminated cover can lift the laminate or warp the board. Use cold-set glue on a book, and keep stones off the hinge and the spine so the book still opens.

Can I bling the spine as well as the front cover?

Only on a decorative book. A spine that flexes will crack the adhesive and shed stones. If you need the spine covered, use a non-flexing box or a display copy instead of a readable book.
